HiFi Pig Review of Saltwood Sounds

A few weeks ago I brought the Finisterre speakers over to Janine Elliot’s place so that she could check out the speakers and test their performance.

It’s the first time I’ve met Janine who writes for HiFi Pig. I was curious about her background. She told me about her career in sound engineering, and I was just blown away with the experience she has in the audio industry, not to mention her musical expertise … or genius, or savant-iness? I think she said that she could play 27 instruments, play the piano backwards and is pitch perfect. ‘As in, you can recognise any sound?’ I asked. ‘Oh yes, for example that fan is whirring at a Bb at the moment, but there’s also other notes in there’. I wondered if the other notes produced by the fan created a chord with a diminished 7. At any rate, Janine’s place is like a thief’s den of audio equipment and LPs.

As I placed the heavy Finisterre’s into place, Janine was getting excited about which set up to use. I cautioned that the speakers might be too sensitive for valve speakers but Janine’s curious mind wanted to know why and tested it. It turned out that the speakers worked very well with valve speakers!

We also had Alastair on the line who was in Spain to answer the geeky questions. Al had the webcam on but the shirt off (other way round next time!) but thankfully that didn’t make it into the review.

Janine’s review of our speakers is very enlightening and makes some great insights into combinations of equipment for the speakers and also some interesting tracks to sample.

“This loudspeaker worked with all classes and with all types of music, though I did feel that acoustic instruments and vocals made it stand out from many speakers around this price point.”
